Electrical Technician – Solar Power (UN Mission MINURSO)

About the role
We are looking for a skilled Electrical Technician specialized in solar and hybrid power systems to support the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). The role involves designing, installing, commissioning and maintaining conventional, solar and diesel‑solar‑battery power plants while ensuring compliance with UN and RA International safety and quality standards.
Key responsibilities
- Design, install, commission and maintain diesel, solar and hybrid generation systems, including off‑grid, grid‑tied and battery‑based configurations.
- Operate and maintain electrical distribution networks, generators, switchgear, inverters, control panels and protection equipment.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair faults to minimise downtime and guarantee reliable power across mission sites.
- Conduct power system analyses such as load assessments, distortion correction, fault finding and energy optimisation studies.
- Implement preventive and corrective maintenance programmes and monitor performance using data‑collection tools.
- Ensure adherence to IEC, NEC, IEEE and UN/RA International QHSE standards.
- Prepare and update technical documentation, drawings and maintenance logs.
- Provide training and technical support to local or junior technicians.
Required profile
- Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems or Renewable Energy.
- Minimum 5 years of hands‑on experience with power generation, solar PV and hybrid systems.
- Strong knowledge of conventional and hybrid power generation, battery energy storage, and generator synchronization.
- Proven ability to work independently in remote, mission‑critical environments.
Required skills
- Solar PV system design and installation (off‑grid, grid‑tied, battery‑based).
- Diesel generator operation and synchronization.
- Power distribution, switchgear, protection systems and load management.
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and inverter technology.
- Power system analysis – load assessment, fault finding, energy optimisation.
- Preventive and corrective maintenance planning.
- SCADA and energy‑management platforms.
- Interpretation of electrical schematics, single‑line diagrams and technical documentation.
- Compliance with IEC, NEC, IEEE standards and UN safety procedures.
